Rollyo launched

I have been a beta tester of Rollyo, a new website created by Dave Pell. Today, Dave proudly announce rollyo on his blog so I think I’m allowed to blog about it now.

What is rollyo? Rollyo is a personal search engine using sources you trust. Rollyo allows you to add URLs into your personal search engine (called searchroll) and when you search using that searchroll, it will only search through those URLs listed in the searchrolls.

Let’s say I created a Mac searchroll, I can add websites such as:

Now, whenever I need to search something, I can use my Mac searchroll and get results only from the above listed URLs.

Enough introduction, just get rolling!.

Switched to webmail

For the past few weeks I have been doing all my email activity through Google’s gmail rather than using Apple Mail. I started forwarding all my personal and work e-mail to my Gmail account months ago for backup purposes so I could have two copies.

But the more I use gmail the more I enjoyed it, and then a few months ago gmail added a new feature. A new feature that allowed me to sent mail from my other e-mail addresses. That’s when I decided to use all my email activity from Gmail. Why spend more time and resources running a separate mail program when you can open your mail from your browser?

To send e-mail using Gmail from other e-mail addresses, go to your Gmail settings, and then go to the Accounts tab. Add another e-mail, and google will send you a confirmation e-mail. Once you received the mail and confirmed, you’ll be able to select your alternate email address when you compose mail.

Yahoo! is also in the process of upgrading it’s webmail interface. Just like Gmail, the new yahoo webmail is going to be an AJAX application. Judging from the Yahoo Mail Beta Review.

The new interface of Yahoo Mail looks very nice. Hopefully, the new Yahoo Mail will allow me to send e-mail from my other e-mail accounts and provide conversation (threaded) feature when viewing my email. Another interesting feature of the new yahoo mail is it allows me to drag and drop messages into folder, which makes it more like a desktop application.

Walt Mossberg from Wall Street Journal also wrote a review on Yahoo! mail beta.

Got my golden ticket

I received my golden ticket to wordpress.com in my e-mail today. My weblog on wordpress.com is http://dekisugi.wordpress.com/. I’m going to use that weblog to blog about things other than computer since I do have interest in other things.

If you’re wondering what dekisugi means, it’s a character from Doraemon, the popular Japanese manga. Dekisugi is the intelligent boy who always get 100% on school tests.

Now, I have invitation for wordpress.com and the first person to comment on this entry gets it. Don’t forget to use your valid e-mail address in the comment form.

Multiple Home Pages in Mozilla Firefox

This is a new trick I just found out. You can now specify multiple home pages in Mozilla Firefox. A home page is the site your browser visits when opened. The default home page for firefox is a nice and simple google search.

What if you have more than one pages that you’d like to open when firefox is launched? First, you need to open new tabs with webpages you’d like to set as the default home pages and go to Tools → Options.

Screen shot Firefox Options

Now you can see the buttons have changed from Use Current Page to Use Current Pages. Click on the Use Current Pages, and you will see the URLs you opened separated by pipe character.

You can also setup multiple home in Firefox without opening the pages by typing the URL manually. The correct format to setup Multiple Homepages is separate each URL with the pipe character. Example:

http://wpram.com/|http://example.com/|http://www.apple.com

You can also set multiple homepages by using the Use Bookmark.. button. Save the pages you want to set as homepage into a dedicated bookmark folder and use that folder as Home Pages.

Spammer murdered

Someone finally shot a spammer. Vardan Kushnir, notorious for sending spam to Russian citizens, has been found dead in his Moscow apartment.

GNOME 2.12 on Breezy Badger

GNOME 2.12 was released yesterday with many new features and bug fixes. I decided to upgrade my Ubuntu Linux from version 5.04 (The Hoary Hedgehog) to version 5.10 (The Breezy Badger).

Apple released iPod nano

The rumors that caused Apple’s stock went up more than 5% yesterday reaching 52-week high were true. Apple just announced the replacement of iPod mini with a new, smaller and sleeker design called iPod nano. So, it’s good bye iPod Mini and Hello iPod nano.

Picture of iPod nano

The iPod nano comes in 2GB and 4GB and it comes in black and white. Both iPod have color screen so just like the iPod you could store your photos in it. It has a very similar design to iPod except the nano is very thin just like a pencil. Read more about iPod nano.

Beside iPod nano, Apple also announced the world’s first mobile phone with iTunes. iTunes is available inside Motorola ROKR E1 mobile phone so you could listen to your music everywhere. More info about it.

The announcement is not finished yet, Apple also released iTunes 5 with long requested features such as streamlined design, smart shuffle, search bar, ability to organize playlist into folders, Windows users can sync with outlook and Outlook express, album reviews.

The iTunes 5 update is not available via Software update at the time I heard about the announcement. So I decided to go to iTunes website and download the application.

iTunes 5 looks different because Apple got rid of the brushed metal theme and use a gradient theme you often see in Tiger. It reminds me to GUIdebook interview with John Gruber.

In that interview Gruber mentioned:

I’m guessing brushed metal will fall out of fashion next. I think it’s ridiculous that the UI look-and-feel from just four years ago is now considered passé.

and

You can see that the designers at Apple are getting tired of the candy-colored look and feel. A lot of their new stuff, the custom controls, doesn’t look like that at all. They’re using much flatter (in the 3D sense) controls, with gradients. E.g. the buttons at the bottom of the Podcasting section in iTunes 4.9.

I think the new iTunes 5 (screenshot) looks very sexy!

All that is not enough though, they also released an update to Quicktime version 7.0.2 but it’s only a minor update. I updated mine already.
