Camino 1.0 released

Camino 1.0 has been released on Valentine’s Day. Camino is a Mac OS X open source web browser based on the Gecko rendering engine. It replaces Mozilla’s XUL-based user interface with a native Cocoa implementation. Just like Mozilla Firefox, Camino is a browser only and does not include Mozilla’s email / composer.

For the past few months, I have been using Camino browser instead of Mozilla Firefox because it runs so much faster on Mac OS X. Most features of Mozilla Firefox such as tabbed browsing, search as you type, and search bar is included with Camino. Unfortunately, you cannot install Firefox extension with Camino. However you can install CamiTools which will provide additional features such as:

  • A toolbar search engine editor for Camino
  • An image and script blocker for Camino
  • Flashblock for Camino
  • Configure many aspects of Camino
  • It lets you switch the appearance style (Aqua, Unified or Metal) and hide the status bar
  • Open your existing Camino profile or create a new one
  • Define your own styles for the pages you’re visiting
  • sync your bookmarks with a ftp server
