Microsoft Update

I visited Windows Update yesterday to manually check if there are any important updates for my Windows. I have automatic update turned on but I like to visit the Windows Update site every few weeks just to see if there are any optional software updates.

On the Windows Update page, I notice a link that ways “New! Get Microsoft Update today!”. I decided to check it out.

Microsoft Update allows you to update not only Windows but also other Microsoft products that you’ve installed such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft SQL Server. Before Microsoft Update, people had to visit multiple websites to update a product. There is no need to visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ or http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/.

Dabble DB - web based online database

Dabble DB Logo

Today, I received an invitation to try out DabbleDB, a web-based online database management system. DabbleDB is a great alternative for individuals who use spreadsheet software instead of proper database application.

DabbleDB allows you to make any kind of application you want. Some example of application you can build with DabbleDB:

  • Contact Management
  • Task Management
  • Event Organizer
  • Expenses Management
  • Many more..

Signing up to DabbleDB will give you a sub-domain (http://username.dabbledb.com). Your e-mail address will be used as the login name. I signed up for a 1 month trial which gives me 5 users, 500 entries per category, 10 applications without SSL encryption option.

New Application

Once signed up, you need to create a new application. To create a new application, you need to name your application and choose a first category. You can name your application anything you want. A category (table) is used to group similar entries in your database and give them all the same fields. A project management application might have categories for Project, Client, Milestone, Task, each with many fields. You can add fields to your database, once you finished creating the application.

Creating an application is a very simple and easy process. Perhaps, DabbleDB could make it even more easier for user by allowing them to create a new application from templates. Default templates can be general database application that people/businesses need such as asset management, event management, contact management, time billing, to-do list, movie library, music library, etc.

View screenshot of creating application in DabbleDB.

New Entry

Now that your application is created, you need to add entries into your database. Creating an entry can be done manually by hand, or you can import it from a spreadsheet. Your entry will only have one field called “Name”, you can add more field if you want.

Since, I created a contact management application, I’m going to create some new fields: Email Address, Home Phone number, Work Phone number. You can now configure each field with the right datatype. Available datatypes are: Text, Number, Money, Date/Time, Choice, Dabble User, Link to Entry, and List of Entries.

Screenshots:

Importing Data

DabbleDB allows you to import data from a spreadsheet. Open your spread sheet software (I use Microsoft Excel) and start adding data. Once you finish, copy and paste into the import form in DabbleDB.

Once you continue, DabbleDB will detect how many rows of data are available for importing. Now you need to specify each column with an existing field within the category or create a new field name. Once you finish this process, all your data from the spreadsheet will be imported.

Screenshots:

VIewing Data

To view your data, DabbleDB use a featured call The View. The view is a table or a calendar that shows you many entries at once, and arranges them however you like. Although there’s only one view active at any one time, you can save as many views as you want. When you’re looking at a table view, you can show or hide columns for individual fields, choose fields to group or sort by, and add calculations like subtotals.

Exporting Data

Data in your DabbleDB application database can be exported into many formats. An RSS feed is provided allowing people to subscribe to changes in data in your application. Other export formats available are PDF, CSV Document, iCalendar, HTML, OPML, and text.

Sharing

You can share your DabbleDB application with other people. The number of people you can share depend on the type of plan you subscribe to. To add users, you only need to enter e-mail addresses of people you wish to add and specify the permission. There are three levels of permission: Read, write and build, Read and Write and Read only.

NetNewsWire Beta released

Ranchero Software (NewsGator), has released a public beta of NetNewsWire 2.1, the popular news aggregator for Mac OS X. The last stable version of NetNewsWire was version 2.0.1 released on 21st July 2005.

The most significant changes to NetNewsWire 2.1 is NewsGator syncing, performance enhancements, new commands for emailing, printing, sort by attention and posting to del.icio.us. NetNewsWire 2.1 is also a Universal Binary application, which will run natively on both Intel and PowerPc-based Mac computers.

As with all beta releases, NetNewsWire Beta also have bugs. In fact, a couple of bugs were already discovered within the first few hours of 2.1b16 release. The bugs were fixed and 2.1b17 was released immediately. Do not run beta software if you’re not comfortable running a beta software.

For those who are curious and wish to install this public beta, please backup your NNW Prefences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NetNewsWire.plist), and Data folder: (~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/). In case you wish to go back to an earlier version, restore the above mentioned files before launching.

The most interesting changes of this release is the ability to sort subscribtion by attention. NetNewsWire now tracks more information about what you do and can tell which feeds are more important to you. Actions that make a feed rank higher: opening item links, flagging items, posting to weblog, and posting to del.icio.us.

End of Life: iMac G5

Apple has declared the end of the iMac G5, the product is now officially declared “End of Life”. When the new iMac Core Duo was released, Apple discontinued the 17-inch iMac G5 model on 3 February 2006. Today, both the 17-inch and the 20-inch is no longer available in Apple Store. History of iMac G5

During it’s lifetime, the iMac G5 underwent three revisions. The iMac G5 was first introduced at the MacWorld Expo Paris on 31 August 2004. This “all new iMac” featured a new design, combining the entire computer behind a flat-panel screen. There were three models available in the first revision of iMac G5, the 17-inch with 1.6 GHz processor, 17-inch with 1.8 GHz processor, and 20-inch with 1.8 GHz processor.

The second revision (Rev.B) featured a new light sensor on the bottom of the iMac that adjusts the glow intensity of the white pulsating sleep indicator light according to the ambient light. The processor were upgraded to 17-inch with 1.8 GHz, 17-inch with 2 GHz and 20-inch with 2.0 GHz processor. All models came with standard 512 MB RAM.

The last revision of the iMac G5 were released at the “One More Thing Event” featuring a built-in iSight Camera, Apple Remote Control, Thinner flat-panel housing, and Front Row software.

Rest in peace iMac G5!

Daylight Saving changes for the Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games is a sport event held every four years involving the Commonwealth Nations. The 2006 Commonwealth Games will be held during March 2006 in Melbourne, Australia. For this year only, Australian states with Day Light Saving time have changed the daylight saving time transition dates to the first Sunday of April 2006.

Because of these changes, operating systems and computer software have to be change to conform to the changes. Today, I am going to provide you with information on how you can update your computer timezone with the new timezone rules.

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft already released a patch for your computer to automatically adjust the computer clock on the correct date. This patch applies to many supported Microsoft’s product such as:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft OWA for Exchange server 2000
  • Microsoft OWA for Exchange Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows CE
  • Microsoft Windows Mobile
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows XP

Mac OS X

Users of Mac OS X can apply the 10.4.5 Update to adjust their computer to the new timezone rules.

Updated the rules for time zones and Daylight Savings Time to conform to changes in the law for the United States, Australia, and other locations, for 2006 and later.

FreeBSD and Linux

Timezone information on most Unix based systems (such as FreeBSD, Linux, and Mac OS X) is most commonly stored in a timezone database called zoneinfo (or sometimes tz). Visit http://www.twinsun.com/tz/tz-link.htm for more information on zoneinfo. On FreeBSD, Linux and Mac OS X these zoneinfo database are stored in /usr/share/zoneinfo directory.

Your distribution might release an updated package to resolve the timezone info, however you can also do it manually.

  1. Download tzdata2006b.tar.gz from ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/ — You can use wget, curl, fetch to download it from terminal.
  2. Create a new directory called zones on the same directory tzdata2006b.tar.gz.
  3. Go (cd) into that directory and type: gzip -dc ../tzdata2006b.tar.gz | tar -xf -
  4. Backup /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia
  5. Type this in the zones directory: zic australasia
  6. FreeBSD users only: copy /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Sydney to /etc/localtime

To validate the changes, you can use the following command: zdump -v /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Sydney | grep 2006

The correct result:

/usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Sydney Sat Apr 1 15:59:59 2006 UTC = Sun Apr 2 02:59:59 2006 EST isdst=1 gmtoff=39600 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Sydney Sat Apr 1 16:00:00 2006 UTC = Sun Apr 2 02:00:00 2006 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=36000 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Sydney Sat Oct 28 15:59:59 2006 UTC = Sun Oct 29 01:59:59 2006 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=36000 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Sydney Sat Oct 28 16:00:00 2006 UTC = Sun Oct 29 03:00:00 2006 EST isdst=1 gmtoff=39600

Notice the April on the first two lines.

Alternatively, Linux users can follow this guide from LinuxSA mailing list archives to apply the new timezone.

New Design

A few weeks ago, I upgraded my Movable Type to 3.2 version and a lot of old Movable Type tags had been deprecated in this release. I wasn’t sure whether my old theme would work or not. Instead of trying to make the old theme compatible with version 3.2, I decided to create a new design for the site. For the last couple of weeks, the blog is using Movable Type’s default theme.

Today, the redesign process of this weblog is finally completed and the new theme is now published. Refresh your browser to view the new theme. The design of the new blog is simpler, and cleaner featuring icons from famfamfam.com.

I also updated my about page with a new profile and a photo.

Please let me know what you think, and if you find any errors feel free to leave a comment.

Intel Mac Mini

Just like the rumors, Apple did release new Mac Mini and a boombox called iPod Hi-Fi. The Mac Mini is the first Mac Mini with Intel processors and there are two type of processor you can choose, the Core Duo and the and Core Solo.

Intel Core Duo is a dual core processor, which is actually two processors built into a single chip. Intel Core Solo is the scaled down version of Intel Core Duo with one core. The Core Duo Mac Mini runs at 1.67 GHz while the Core Solo version runs at 1.5 GHz. Both Mac Mini comes with a default RAM of 512 MB, which you can upgrade to 1GB or 2GB.

Instead of having a stand alone graphic card with it’s own RAM, the new Mac Mini featured integrated Intel Intel GMA950 graphic processor. The Intel GMA950 graphics shares a minimum of of 80 MB RAM. Tests results of Intel GMA950 graphic by ExtremeTech is available if you want to know how this integrated GPU performs. A RAM upgrade is recommended if you plan to purchase the Intel Mac Mini.

Just like the last few Apple computers, the Mac Mini comes with Apple Remote and Front Row software. The Front Row application is now updated allowing you to access your shared iPhoto and iTunes Libraries.

The old PowerPC G4 Mac Mini is no longer available on Apple Store but you can probably find them on eBay.
