NetNewsWire Beta released

Ranchero Software (NewsGator), has released a public beta of NetNewsWire 2.1, the popular news aggregator for Mac OS X. The last stable version of NetNewsWire was version 2.0.1 released on 21st July 2005.

The most significant changes to NetNewsWire 2.1 is NewsGator syncing, performance enhancements, new commands for emailing, printing, sort by attention and posting to del.icio.us. NetNewsWire 2.1 is also a Universal Binary application, which will run natively on both Intel and PowerPc-based Mac computers.

As with all beta releases, NetNewsWire Beta also have bugs. In fact, a couple of bugs were already discovered within the first few hours of 2.1b16 release. The bugs were fixed and 2.1b17 was released immediately. Do not run beta software if you’re not comfortable running a beta software.

For those who are curious and wish to install this public beta, please backup your NNW Prefences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NetNewsWire.plist), and Data folder: (~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/). In case you wish to go back to an earlier version, restore the above mentioned files before launching.

The most interesting changes of this release is the ability to sort subscribtion by attention. NetNewsWire now tracks more information about what you do and can tell which feeds are more important to you. Actions that make a feed rank higher: opening item links, flagging items, posting to weblog, and posting to del.icio.us.
