Yahoo Messenger for Vista

In preparation of Windows Vista, Yahoo has decided to rebuild its popular instant messaging software from scratch. The new Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista will take advantage of Vista’s new graphical subsystem called Windows Presentation Foundation (It was code-named Avalon before).

Windows Presentation Foundation will bring some significant improvement to the look and feel of the software. Some noticeable change would be: smoother animation, better looking animations, improved scaling and transparency.

The Contact List

The first noticeable change to the contact list is your contacts’ info and avatar would automatically scale up when you place your mouse over on a contact.

Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista - Contact list

An iPhoto-like slider is available at the bottom of the contact list which would allow the users to resize the contact list depending on the users’ preferences. When you resize the contact list to very large, you will be able to see your friends status on Yahoo services such as Flickr, Yahoo! 360, etc.

Chat window

Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista - Chat window

Similar to Adium, Yahoo Messenger for Vista will feature tab chats which will allow you to organize multiple chat windows into a single window.

To turn a single chat window into a tab, all you have to do is drag the window and drop it onto another chat window. Drag a tab out of a window and the chat window will reappear.

I hope Yahoo will allow users to set tab chat as the default chat window mode. So when you started a new chat with friends, a new tab will automatically appear.

You can now share your flickr photos right from your chat windows.

Windows Sidebar

Windows Vista Sidebar - Yahoo Messenger Gadget

Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista will also take advantage of Windows Sidebar, a panel for Desktop Gadgets (a.k.a Widgets) located on the side of your Windows Vista desktop.

The new Yahoo Messenger will include a custom Yahoo Messenger gadget which will allow you to drag someone from the contact list to the gadget. The gadget will then show whether that particular contact is available or not.

New Emoticon

A rather obtrusive feature is the new animated emoticons. Similar to Windows Live Messenger, you can now send a large animated emoticon which will automatically shrink to normal size.

I’m not sure when the software will be available, you can now leave your e-mail address on Yahoo Messenger for Vista web. They will let you know when it’s ready. Meanwhile, you can preview the video of Yahoo Messenger for Vista.

As one of the lucky few to receive a copy of Vista RTM. I didnt get a new computer and I didnt upgrade it and Vista is not slow and it isnt bloated. Alot of people will think that Vista isnt worth it because all you can see is “visual” changes. Theres no way to see the internal changes unless you actually use it. Windows Vista is definitely worth getting because its actually faster and easier to use than XP is and will ever be even if MS actually comes out with a SP3 for XP in 08.

As for Vista with its empty, shiny bars, thats not what makes it slow. Programs written in .NET and WPF are just traditionally slower than those written in other langauages, so far. Thats not and wont be Vistas fault.

As for YM for Vista. It looks great I just hope they havent gotten rid of YM plugins. Since the screenshots of this new messenger are only of a PRE-alpha build things could change drastically by the time its actually released. But, I doubt it will change for the bad though.

I think we all need to just give up on this even coming out this year they told cnet infoworld and a couple of others at ces that it would be out in the second quarter of this year well its past the that , i also saw on wikopedia a few weeks ago that it was supposed to be out july 2 , but now if you go there and look it just says guess what coming soon wow like thats anything new , coming soon apparently to yahoo means when ever they feel like , they showed it off at ces in january and they along with alot of other software companys got vista early to beable to develop applications for it well yahoo on there messenger blog after saying to cnet infoworld and others that they would have it out 2nd quarter is saying that there will be a beta in the coming months , i think they need to take down the coming soon because i dont think they have any plans to release it soon , as for me im sick of waiting for these idiots they have had at least 8 to 9 months already to at least get a beta out , its not like there writing the whole thing they just took it down to base code but yet they have not told us anything but hurry up and wait

42. gerik4 12 Jul 2007

Yahoo dont care about us they care about there advertisers cause thats where the money is for them we could complain until were blue in the face they dont care we dont spend money to advertise with them so to them we dont matter , but they need to realize we are the reason they have advertisers if we didnt use there services they would not have anything to offer there advertisers there for they would not have a company very long cause any one in internet marketing or internet knows that advertising is the money maker

43. AJ 18 Jul 2007

Yahoo! Messenger, just like Microsoft, has become really annoying, and now they’ve teamed up.

Doesn’t anyone prefer how Yahoo! Messenger was when it first came out? It was nice and simple.

Everyone go back to ICQ and DOS!

44. debbie 19 Jul 2007

53. gerik4 2 Aug 2007

Im tired of everyone bad mouthing vista i have 1. gig of ram a 256 mb ati graphics card and a 3.0 ghz pentium 4 processor and i have windows vista home premium installed , if people would look at vista there is a compatibality wizard in vista that i only had to use for sim city 3000 , everything else if needed anything had to update the drivers which you have to do with all os upgrades , yeah yahoo 8.1 voice doesnt work that aint vista s fualt its yahoo for being behind on there software updates , basically if you have a problem with vista your probably an idiot . i ahve had no problems my pc runs faster and more stable with vista ovr xp so apparently the people who complain about vista prbably should not be using a computer cause they might mess some thing up
